Robert Powell, 49, was spotted by an officer talking on his Wednesday on Greenwich Avenue, said Sgt. Brian Butler.
When Powell noticed that the officer had spotted him, he sped up, went over a double-yellow line and through a red light in an attempt to get away, Butler said.
He also passed a stopped school bus on the right side while children were getting off the bus. Luckily, Butler said, none of the children were hurt.
The pursuit ended when Powell pulled into a home on Orchard Street where he told officers he knew he should have stopped but "he didn't want to get a ticket for talking on the cell phone," Butler said.
That ticket would have cost him around $93.
Instead, Powell was charged with reckless driving, engaging police in a pursuit, illegal passing a school bus ($465), ignoring traffic control signals ($129), and failure to drive in the proper lane ($132), Butler added.
